As Saints Foundation’s Education department prepare for another academic year in September, we reflect on the success of Kayleigh Tonks.

Having joined us in September 2015 as part of the first female cohort to enrol in the Education and Futsal Scholarship, Kayleigh graduated this summer with a Triple Distinction Star (D*D*D*), the equivalent to 3 A*’s at A-Level.

Kayleigh joined us with the target of achieving DMM in her BTEC Extended Diploma, and the result she came away with highlights the consistent hard work she has maintained since joining us almost two years ago.

Kayleigh has been a fantastic role model for the other girls on the scholarship; she has constantly demonstrated a conscientious work ethic, successfully balancing her studies with playing 11-a-side football for Portsmouth Ladies in her own time, where she finished the season as Top Scorer.

The training Kayleigh has received throughout the Futsal and Education Scholarship has given her the tools to take her sporting participation to the next level, resulting in her successfully being accepted in the Regional Talent Club for Southampton FC Ladies U21’s.

Kayleigh explains, “Not only have I gained a valuable qualification, the Futsal practical training sessions and games have also helped me develop into a more skilful player with more confidence and technical ability. I now look forward to remaining with Southampton Football Club as part of the ladies U21’s team, and taking both my football and education to the next level.”

In addition to her football achievement, the qualification she has gained through Saints Foundation will enable her to now undertake a BSc Criminology Degree at Southampton Solent University, beginning in September this year.

Kayleigh commented, “My decision to combine my previous football experience with a sports qualification proved to be the right choice, as the Triple Distinction Star grade I received will now allow me to go on to study at University.
