Local business volunteers help build Saints Foundation’s young leaders

This school term, Saints Connect has delivered a Leadership Programme to 152 participants, across 13 secondary schools in Southampton.

This has now continued into the summer with a Level 1 Qualification in Sports Leadership for those who have successfully developed their leadership skills throughout the programme and become Saints Foundation Sports Leaders.

The Level 1 Qualification sessions have taken place at St. Mary’s Stadium, which have included participants taking part in engaging activities to develop teamwork & communication skills.

To recognise the achievements of a group of 16 participants, Saints Connect has partnered with seven volunteers across three companies, who have offered diversionary reward activities including Digital Design with WhiteHype, Indoor Skydiving with Hollywood Bowl and Archery with Radian.

Saints Connect Project Officer, Steve Bollon says “We’re extremely grateful to our corporate partners in supporting our participants to gain new experiences, develop confidence in themselves and broaden their horizons for the future.”

Rohullah, 13, has been involved in the programme since October 2016. “I feel more confident speaking out in front of people,” Rohullah reflects. “It helps because you get more experience, so in the real world if you ever have to speak out in front of a lot of people you already know what that’s like.”

Saints Foundation recognises the importance of partnering with companies who have a wealth of knowledge and expertise in areas of interest to young people. Its aim is to deliver two engaging and diverse activities per month, with 20 volunteer spaces available until March 2018.

Gavin Mills, who manages Hollywood Bowl Eastleigh, has been involved with a number of different Saints Foundation and Saints Connect activities and is a huge advocate of the programme. “It is always great to meet an enthusiastic and engaging group of young people that have clearly worked hard to achieve a lot so far with the programme. Rohullah in particular showed a real direction on the type of career he wants for himself and at such a young age, it is really impressive to see.”
