Saints star lends a hand at a special Foundation assembly

One of Saints Foundation’s Premier League Primary Stars Schools were the lucky hosts of several special guests this week.

Ben Lyttleton and Alex Bellos, authors of the successful Football School books, delivered an engaging assembly to over 240 pupils, and were also joined by Southampton FC’s Oriol Romeu.

Having a footballer like Oriol present wasn’t just an exciting experience for those from Foundry Lane either, and it added valuable context to the lessons Alex and Ben were trying to deliver.

“The session at Foundry Lane Primary today was great. We speak to lots of children, but this was the first time we’ve done it with a Premier League footballer and the reaction was fantastic,” Alex commented.

“Oriol is a brilliant role model, because as we heard he is all in favour of hard work, determination and learning, and that’s what we are also about. We’re all about getting kids learning and developing through reading.”

The Football School books aim to use football as a way of educating children in a variety of different topics.

Alex and Ben delivered four mini lessons to the Foundry Lane pupils, covering Biology, Zoology, Geography and Drama, each time using Oriol’s personal experiences and position as a role model to add weight to the lessons.

“Partnering with Saints Foundation has been brilliant, but to also have Oriol as part of the Football School session was really inspiring,” Ben said. “It’s been a really successful collaboration from everyone involved today, and Foundry Lane have been amazing in hosting such a great assembly, hopefully we can do more events like this in the future.”
